Alternative Dentistry

Biomimetic Dentistry

Biomimetic dentistry is the practice of treating weak, cracked, and decaying teeth in a way that keeps them strong and seals them from bacterial invasion.
Here at Anita Rathee DDS, Biomimetic Dentistry has practically eliminated the need to cut our patients teeth down for crowns or perform invasive root canal treatment.

Biomimetic means to copy or mimic nature.

Nature does it best and that is our model. Studying the natural properties of teeth allow us to better duplicate them. Dr. Rathee uses materials and techniques that closely simulate natural teeth and hold up better to the normal stressors on your teeth like constant chewing.

Both Dr. Rathee’s staff and her patients can testify that teeth restored with biomimetic restorations feel and look more like real teeth and they can be confident that the the potential of failure, including root canals and fractures has been reduced dramatically or eliminated.

Modern adhesives and bonding techniques are the driving force of biomimetic dentistry.

Traditional dentistry often requires destroying healthy tooth structure in order to accommodate a new restoration. Dentists had to destroy in order to create. Now Dr. Rathee is able to bond or glue teeth back together and even add missing parts of the tooth reliably without removing precious tooth structure with the added value of sealing the tooth from bacterial infection. This has mostly eliminated the need for more destructive crowns and painful root canal treatment.

Biomimetic dentistry is conservative.

Our philosophy is "less dentistry is the best dentistry" or better said: "less is more".
Preservation and conservation lie at the heart of biomimetic dentistry.
The heart of the tooth is the pulp, which is the brain of the tooth. Preserving the pulp is vital to the patient’s lifelong dental experience. Decreasing the need for the advanced, invasive care seen in traditional dentistry has profound positive effects on people’s lives. In the long run it saves money and time in the dental chair. We can now help patients create a healthy and happy mouth with simple, and often painless techniques!

Call us today to learn more about this exciting new approach to keeping your smile healthy and whole.

Non Drug Alternatives For Relaxation

We know that going to the dentist is far from a relaxing experience even for the our calmest patients. In addition to traditional prescription medications, we offer non-drug alternatives for relaxation at no additional charge.

Alpha-Stim®

The Alpha-Stim® is a small device that clips to your ears and stimulates the production of alpha rhythms in your brain. Alpha rhythms are the "feel good" brain waves that are accompanied by feelings of calmness, relaxation and increased mental focus. Alpha waves appear to decrease stress-effects, reduce agitation, stabilize mood, and regulate both sensations and perceptions of particular types of pain. The positive effects of using Alpha-Stim® have been shown to last from a few hours to as long as 24 hours.

EndoTrex®

EndoTrex is a sublingual spray form of L-theanine designed to provide support for promoting a relaxed state of mental alertness without drowsiness. It improves mood and better sleep. This advanced liposomal liquid formula is rapidly absorbed and well tolerated.

L-Theanine (N-ethyl-L-glutamine) is an amino acid commonly found in tea. It has been shown to reduce mental and physical stress, produce feelings of relaxation and improves cognition and mood. Historically being known as a relaxing agent has prompted scientific research on its pharmacology. Behavioural studies in animals suggest improvement in learning and memory. It improves mood and promotes better sleep. This advanced lipsomal liquid formula is rapidly absorbed and well tolerated.

Never thought going to the dentist could put you in a good mood? Think again! Going to the office of Dr. Anita Rathee might just change your mind.

Air Abrasion Technology

When most people think of the dentist, they imagine the sound of the dental drill. That's because whether preparing a tooth for a dental crown, removing cavities or performing root canal therapy, dentists have relied on this time-tested technology for years. However, modern dentists like Dr. Anita Rathee now have a newer option for removing portions of the tooth structure without that unpleasant familiar whir: air abrasion.

Air abrasion is a method for removing tooth decay with tiny particles of aluminum oxide or silica. Imagine a miniature sandblaster gently wearing away the decayed material without the friction and sound of a drill. Dr. Rathee uses compressed air to spray a stream of the sand-like particles at the affected tooth while an assistant generally suctions away the excess.

Non Surgical Alternatives To Gum Disease Treatment

The Perio Protect Method™ combines professional cleanings with the use comfortable soft trays to deliver medications under the gums where a toothbrush and floss can’t reach. Without the proper care and attention, bacterial colonies of biofilm will grow down into the space between teeth and gums, potentially causing gum disease and even tooth loss. You simply put medication in the trays and wear them for just minutes a day between dental visits.

Laser TherapyLaser gum therapy is a less painful and less traumatic alternative to treat periodontal disease at any stage. The beam of light produced by the laser has the ability to remove infected soft tissues in a periodontal pocket and vaporize the bacteria. The aspect of laser assisted periodontal treatment that most patients appreciate is its comfort. The technology employed by lasers is safe, reliable and offers effective treatment for many gum disorders.

Safe Mercury Removal

We are a mercury safe office and follow the IAOMT protocols for safe mercury removal.

Occlusal Disease

What is Occlusal Disease?

Some experts believe that Occlusal Disease is the number one cause of tooth loss, and the number one cause of fillings and crowns breaking and needing to be replaced.

Occlusal disease is a very serious condition that causes unnatural wear and damage to your teeth, often requiring expensive repairs. Damage isn’t limited to your teeth. Occlusal Disease can also affect the tissues that support your teeth, and lead to facial pain and headaches.

Occlusal Disease is a generic term (like Periodontal Disease) that covers a number of pathological conditions associated with the bite, jaw muscles and the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ).

Dr Rathee is trained to treat Occlusal Disease. She will assess your signs and symptoms to see if you suffer from this condition and with proper treatment you can prevent costly consequences.

Common signs and symptoms of Occlusal Disease include:

1. Tooth Sensitivity
Recent research reveals that much tooth sensitivity is related to Occlusal Disease and excessive occlusal forces placed on certain teeth. With Dr Rathee’s help you too might be able to eat ice cream again!

2. Fractured Teeth and Fillings
Teeth are able to withstand the stresses of normal function, as are dental restorations. Most of the time when teeth break or restorations fail, the cause is an unbalanced bite that places excessive force upon one or several teeth.

3. Pathological (unnatural) Wear
Properly balanced teeth show minimal or no wear with natural use. When people have Occlusal Disease in the forms of bruxism (teeth grinding) or an unstable bite, they can wear their teeth up to 100 times faster than healthy people.
Millions of dollars are spent each year repairing the damage caused to teeth by pathological wear.

4. Headaches and Muscle Pain
Most people don’t realize it, but a surprising number of headaches can be attributed to Occlusal Disease. An unbalanced bite can put strain on muscles and joints. This not only causes pain and fatigue, but it can eventually lead to long term damage.

How is Occlusal Disease Treated?

Occlusal Disease has many causes. Dr. Rathee is trained in occlusal disease and will discuss all of these factors with you. The two main problems are having an unbalanced bite and premature toothe wear from bruxism.

Even for people who grind their teeth uncontrollably, having a balanced bite is beneficial. Less damage is caused when you have an even bite t hat dispenses forces more uniformly. In addition, wearing a mouth guard is the most basic way to protect the teeth from damage.

Can Occlusal Disease be Cured?

Occlusal Disease is often due to chronic conditions that can’t be permanently eliminated; but it can be controlled to avoid painful consequences and long-term damage.

At What Age Should Occlusal Disease be Treated?

The sooner the better! Signs and symptoms of Occlusal Disease are evident early in life, even in children. Early treatment can prevent needless pain and suffering.
